Extract folder and rename folder to match the name of the folder in the contents folder with “-child”, on the end of the name. Example: “twentytwelve-child”.

Copy the theme header information (section is between the comments “/* example */” marks) from the original style.css file and paste it over the header in the extracted css file then edit the line items listed below.

Theme name: needs to be name of theme with child on the end, this is what shows in the theme listing

Theme URI: Needs to be the path to the files in the child folder “http://yourwebsite/wp-content/themes/themename-child”

Author: Your name

Author Uri: Your website address

Template: You will have to enter in this sectionName of the theme you're making a copy.

Leave the Description, Version, License, License URI, tags as is.

Text Domain: The name of the child folder.

Copy the screenshot.png file from the theme folder to the child folder. This will be theme picture that shows in the Themes section of the dashboard.

Copy CSS code from the original style.css to the child style.css file to modify the theme to your preference. If you want to edit the php templates just copy the file from the original theme folder to the child theme folder and edit the file in the child theme.
